What is Somatic Experiencing™?
SE® is an approach to trauma recovery that directly works with the body and our autonomic nervous system. It is the life’s work of Dr. Peter Levine, the authour of his popular books, Waking the Tiger and In an Unspoken Voice.
SE® defines trauma as a physiological phenomenon and not as an event per se. This means to resolve trauma we do not just talk or think our way through a traumatic event. Instead, we work directly with our fight, flight and freeze physiological states that can become stuck in the body. In these instances, the body has not yet been able to renegotiate the physiological responses activated through a highly charged experience.
Using the somatic experiencing approach, we learn to restore homeostasis or balance, in much the same way as other mammals do. Our body is naturally designed to metabolize trauma as a way to reset our nervous system after a difficult, threatening, or traumatic experience. This helps to restore our capacity to respond flexibly to life challenges, and to be able to bounce back more easily from adversity. In addition, we can reconnect with our life force energy and our essence which helps us to be more present in our lives.
Somatic Experiencing™ can help resolve symptoms associated with trauma including PTSD, CPTSD, developmental trauma resulting from early childhood abuse, neglect, and attachment issues, anxiety, depression, OCD to name only a few.

SE® London Training Team
As the owner of Patricia Berendsen & Associates Trauma Healing Centre of London Counselling, Psychotherapy and Wellness Services, Patricia has dedicated her career to helping clients recover their resiliency and heal in body, mind, and spirit.
With over 25 years in the counselling field, Patricia is a Couple and Family Therapist (CCFT), Registered Social Worker (RSW), Registered Psychotherapist (RP), Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP), and Somatic Sex Educator (SSE). Specializing in trauma, developmental issues, and relationship challenges, Patricia is a passionate advocate for Somatic Experiencing. In 2005, Patricia discovered Somatic Experiencing™, describing it as a professional turning point.
As a fearless pioneer, Patricia brought Somatic Experiencing™ from the USA to Ontario. From the first cohort in London ON, Patricia has been involved in seeding and supporting Somatic Experiencing™ trainings which have grown to include Toronto, Ottawa, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Patricia serves as an Advanced Consultant and Lead Assistant with Somatic Experiencing™ International and with Dr. Peter Levine's Ergos .Institute Inc. for Somatic Education.
As an AAMFT/OAMFT/RP Approved Supervisor and trauma specialist and thought leader, Patricia's written work has appeared in over 40 publications, including peer-reviewed journals and book chapters.
A two-time cancer survivor, Patricia has been in a warm and wonderful relationship for the past 28 years. Patricia is the mother of four children. She can be found on her walks in the nearby woods or neighbourhood, reading a work-related book, or enjoying good food.
My first professional incarnation was as an elementary teacher in New Brunswick and Northwest Territories, Canada. After 12 years of being in front of the classroom, my focus shifted to psychotherapeutic group work. I studied various humanistic approaches and bodywork at PD Seminars, then earned a Master’s degree from the University of Victoria in 1995. I have worked as a mental health therapist for a non-profit community agency, providing short-term therapy to adults, training and supervising volunteers and supervising graduate students. I also have a private practice.
Somatic Experiencing™ entered my life in 2000 and has since been a major focus in my professional orientation. Incorporating SE® bodywork/touch has deepened my experience and strengthened the impact of the therapeutic process. Early in this learning process I was privileged to be part of a gifted training team working with First Nations peoples here on Vancouver Island. The depth of the trauma and commitment to change foreshadowed the transformation through the healing process. I am grateful and humbled to have witnessed this. They reinforced how organic somatic work is, the power of connection, and the necessity of embodying the full range of life’s energy. Collaboration and connection are key. We are not meant to go-it alone.
I continue to marvel at and be awed by, the continuous richness Somatic Experiencing™ offers.
